First Periodic Review: a milestone reached

The project’s first Periodic Review (RP1) confirmed the consortium’s strong progress toward its technical objectives. Reviewers gave an overall positive assessment, raised no major scientific or technical concerns, and offered constructive recommendations to strengthen documentation, traceability between activities and impacts, and overall reporting quality. The coordination team launched a consortium-wide follow-up immediately after the review, and this edition rounds up what every Work Package has achieved since.

CIRCMAN5.0 at Circular Valley Convention 2026

On 11–12 March 2026, CIRCMAN5.0 was represented at the Circular Valley Convention 2026 at Areal Böhler in Düsseldorf, one of Europe’s leading events dedicated to the circular economy.

The event provided an excellent opportunity to engage with the wider circular economy community, exchange ideas, build valuable connections, and discuss opportunities for advancing circularity in industry and manufacturing. The strong participation and discussions highlighted the growing momentum towards a more sustainable and circular future.

 

 

2nd Clustering and Cohesion Advisory Board (CCAB) Meeting

CIRCMAN5.0 also held its 2nd Clustering and Cohesion Advisory Board (CCAB) Meeting, bringing together project partners and advisory board members to exchange insights and provide valuable guidance on the project’s progress and future activities.

The session provided valuable feedback on strengthening the project’s review presentation, with constructive discussions covering system integration, pilot progress, semantic interoperability, Digital Product Passports (DPPs), data spaces, and the overall industrial value and impact of the project.

 

 

4th CIRCMAN5.0 Plenary Meeting

Following the project’s first Periodic Review, the CIRCMAN5.0 consortium came together online for its 4th Plenary Meeting to reflect on 18 months of progress towards a human-centred, AI-enabled framework for circular photovoltaic manufacturing. The meeting provided an opportunity to review achievements, discuss ongoing activities, and align on the next steps for the project.

 

 

Updates from Sister projects (EU circularity cluster)

In June, the DATA4CIRC project, one of CIRCMAN5.0’s sister projects, held the second in its series of webinars on Digital Product Passports.

ACHIEVEMENTS ACROSS THE WORK PACKAGES

WP2 — Requirements for Circularity in PV Manufacturing

  • Completed and consolidated the CIRCMAN5.0 reference architecture, end-user requirements and pilot use cases, laying the technical foundation for the rest of the project.
  • Delivered a comprehensive Circularity Framework with project-wide KPIs for environmental, operational and circular manufacturing assessment.
  • Strengthened methodological descriptions and traceability between requirements, architecture and implementation following the Review Meeting; revised deliverables form an enhanced baseline for RP2.

WP3 — Novel Simulation and Modelling Software

  • Established the first version of the Human-Centred AI-driven Digital Framework for modelling, simulation and decision support in circular PV manufacturing.
  • Developed the initial Information Modelling Framework, Asset Administration Shell (AAS) infrastructure, Cognitive Digital Twin framework and AI-driven eco-design methodologies.
  • Delivered the first generation of AI-enabled production planning and Decision Support components, and is now moving toward integration and validation within the pilots.

WP4 — Environmental Impact Assessment Toolbox

  • Established the initial Environmental Impact Assessment framework, combining LCA methodologies, embodied energy assessment and AI-driven environmental forecasting.
  • Developed first versions of the Circularity Framework, environmental KPI forecasting models and the Human-in-the-Loop Recommendation Engine.
  • Completed the baseline environmental assessment methodology using real industrial data from participating PV manufacturers.

WP5 — Trusted Framework for Circular Knowledge Exchange

  • Established the trusted data infrastructure underpinning Digital Product Passports, circular certification and secure information exchange across the PV value chain.
  • Developed the first version of the Digital Product Passport platform, with a blockchain-enabled trust architecture and cybersecurity framework.
  • Demonstrated interoperability with European Data Space concepts and set up an initial Collaborative Space for trusted stakeholder data exchange.

WP6 — Integration, Validation and Pilot Demonstration

  • Completed the preparation phase for all four industrial pilots, with a common pilot-readiness framework and integration roadmap.
  • Ran technical workshops and site visits to validate pilot requirements, data availability, sensor strategies and deployment constraints.
  • Now transitioning from pilot preparation to system integration, validation and large-scale demonstration.

WP7 — Dissemination, Communication & Impact Creation

  • Website downloads section updated with public deliverables and communication material; new webpage highlighting related EU clustering projects.
  • Promotional materials rolled out: poster, brochure and project flyer available; roll-up banner and promotional videos, 7 press releases published and the two project newsletter released.
  • Clustering and Cohesion Advisory Board (CCAB) established; 1st webinar (“Meet the CIRCMAN5 Use Cases”) and partner videos published on YouTube.
  • Innovation & Exploitation: Innovation Board set up, partners mapped background/foreground IP in the 1st Exploitation Workshop, standardisation screening under way, with the 2nd Exploitation Workshop planned.
WP1 — KEEPING THE PROJECT ON TRACK

WP1 spans every other Work Package, monitoring tasks, deliverables and activities across the consortium. Highlights this period:

Technical & scientific management

  • Semi-finalised the multi-layered reference architecture covering modelling, simulation, assessment, decision-making and cross-cutting services.
  • Ongoing mapping of tools to Work Packages, use cases, pilots and data interfaces (AAS, ontologies, APIs), with validated alignment between technical components and stakeholder requirements.
  • Drafted a preliminary cybersecurity framework — threat models and security-by-design requirements — alongside regular WP-level and technical-pilot coordination workshops.

Quality, risk & contingency

  • Risk registry updated on a 4-monthly cycle, with two new risks identified this period; WP leaders continue to review relevant risks in their monthly meetings.

Data management, governance & ethics

  • Technical partners are compiling detailed inputs for the Data Management Plan, covering digital-twin outputs, training/validation data and simulation results.

 

LOOKING AHEAD
  • Complete preparation of all industrial pilot sites — sensor deployment, data-collection infrastructure and KPI baselines.
  • Finalise the first operational versions of the CIRCMAN5.0 tools, ensuring technical maturity for deployment.
  • Accelerate integration of WP3–WP5 components into the unified CIRCMAN5.0 platform.
  • Launch the first integrated demonstrations and validation activities across the four industrial pilots.
  • Verify interoperability, data exchange and end-to-end workflows under real industrial conditions.
  • Hold the next Plenary Meeting at a pilot site, combining consortium discussions with live demonstrations.
